Alebrijes are popular hand-carved wooden figurines made by Oaxacan Artisans. These wood figurines represent mythical animals that are painted with beautiful, bright colors. The paint used to decorate the alebrijes is acrylic and is often mixed with natural dyes from plants, bugs, and minerals. The towns of Arrazola, San Martin Tilcajete and La Union Tejalapan in Oaxaca are well know for the production of alebrijes and has become a major source of income for the artisans.
It is believed that alebrijes are used to keep bad spirits away.
